FITNESS RELEVANT EMPLOYER PRACTICAL TRAINING

1. Scunthorpe United A.F.C. and Huddersfield Town A.F.C. (Academy)
These roles were done as part of my Msc Sport and Exercise Science dissertation. My aim was to assess the effects of incorrect posture and/or muscular strength/flexibility imbalances upon soccer performance. The role involved me carrying out a battery of football-specific fitness tests, functional movement screens (to assess for lacking mobility, stability or muscular inflexibility that inhibits motion), and quadriceps and hamstring strength testing (to assess for strength imbalances that could predispose injury and inhibit performance) at periodic intervals. Between testing sessions academy players at Scunthorpe United undertook specific drills to remedy the accumulated tension that would affect proprioceptive feedback (thus increasing injury risks), core stability drills, general integrated closed-kinetic chain movement patterns and strength correction training to remedy imbalances in quadriceps to hamstring ratio values. The time that I spent doing such work is deemed a crucial insight into what I believe is the way forward in terms of sports conditioning and injury prevention. The premise is that once such imbalances are rectified, better performance and reduced injury risks will follow.
2. Bradford City A.F.C. (First team) and Huddersfield Town A.F.C. (Academy)
These roles involved me carrying out a battery of football-specific fitness tests on both the reserve and first team players at Bradford City and the academy players at Huddersfield Town at periodic intervals (end of ‘02/’03 season, and pre and during 2003/04 season with Bradford City; and during 2004/05 season with Huddersfield Town). Reports (for each fitness-testing day) upon the players’ performances (including strengths/weakness, and aspects of concern) within the tests, were constructed and then submitted to the Bradford City club manager (Nicky Law) and Huddersfield Town Academy coaches. The role involved precise communication between my self and club personnel in reference to any player-specific concerns regarding certain aspects of a player’s performance/health that can be improved via the implementation of specific fitness regimes.
3. Cannons Health Club/Leeds International Pool
Personal training involves medical screening, demonstrating the correct techniques on the aerobic/resistance equipment and writing personalized fitness programmes to enable clients to achieve both their training goals, and where necessary manage any underlying medical conditions (i.e. CHD, arthritis etc). I work on the Heartwatch Phase IV cardiac rehabilitation, which involves helping numerous symptomatic individuals from their phase III hospital based exercise into long term continuation of physical activity to regress coronary/vascular conditions.
4. City of Leeds and City of Bradford Water-Polo Fitness Coach
This involves working with the players of ‘The City of Bradford Waterpolo mens’ team’ and ‘City of Leeds womens team who are involved in their respective northern, and National Championships. Both roles involve personal training with each individual team member. Firstly by assessing current fitness levels, and secondly by devising aerobic/muscular fitness programmes in relation to their specific positions. All these individualistic fitness requirements are constructed into seasonal training programmes (closed, pre, during, and post) aimed at maximizing both individual and team performance. The role involves precise communication with the team managers in reference to certain aspects of a player’s performance that can be improved via the implementation of specific fitness regimes. At the end of the first season the City of Bradford won the Northern league and ended fourth in the National league.
